How This Works
- Every Saturday morning, there will be a new prompt.
- Make art* inspired by the prompt.
- As usual -- share if you feel comfortable.
- Have fun!
- Q. Is this a weekly challenge or a daily challenge?
A. While the prompt comes out each week, we hope that it inspires you to spend the week being creative and making work based on that theme every day. Maybe you will make one artwork over seven days. Maybe you will express that theme in seven different media. Maybe you will make seven variations on the theme. It's up to you.
- Q. Is there a theme to the prompts?
A. Each prompt is a bit of poetry to do with the season and are open-ended so that you have a lot of ways to be inspired. The first two weeks of each month are stanzas from Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's "The Poet's Calendar" and then we have similar prompts that go with that tone. We want the prompts to leave lots of room to explore these ideas in the medium in which you best express yourself.
- Q. Why are you writing "brainstorm" as two words?
A. Because we're picturing a winter storm. And also room to brainstorm ideas and play around with the theme more than you might do with a daily prompt. So it's a play on words by a person who isn't that great with words.
- Q. Is this a contest?
A. Nope. There are no prizes and posting things publicly is not an invitation for criticism or comparison. This is a challenge -- of yourself -- to make something every day and start fresh each week with a new idea.
- Q. Can I use <insert medium here>?
A. You can use whatever you want to make art. The medium is up to you -- pencil, ink, clay, digital, words, sounds, photography, sticks found in your yard, sand, whatever. 2D, 3D, 4D hyperspace, whatever. The trick is to make new art every day. Don’t dig out something you already made but instead make something new.
- Q. Where can I share my work?
A. We’d love to see it, so if you’re game, share it with us on Facebook or Discord. Or just hang it on your fridge or late night text it to your ex (if you do this, please tell us how this went). How often you post is up to you, but it’s important to display it, even if you’re the only one who sees it.
- Q. I've already missed some days/weeks. Is it just too late?
A. There is no such thing as too late. Remember, you are challenging yourself. So be better than you were yesterday -- start making something awesome!
